For years, the matter of balancing Pakistan's supply against the demand for electricity has remained a largely unresolved matter. Pakistan faces a significant challenge in revamping its network responsible for the supply of electricity. Initially, Pakistan mostly focused on hydroelectric power generation to meet it’s energy needs. The growth in hydel power generation could not match the increase of demand for power therefore creating a shortage. The burden was shared by thermal generation in Pakistan. But, the constraints over fuel availability etc resulted in all efforts going vain and the power/electricity shortage continued to spiral out of hand. This was managed through frequent power cuts. Demand continues to outstrip supply of electricity.
Pakistan has abundant energy resources, which need to be harnessed through various strategies for optimum utilization. Renewable Energy resources can play an important role in bridging energy deficit

The contribution of coal in world energy is around 40% |

Pakistan has world 5th largest coal reserves but .the contribution of coal in our energy supplies is less than 10%, and for power production it’s not even 1 %. |
